Tourmalet, Hautacam, Col d’Aubisque… these are just some of the names that come to mind when thinking of the famous mountains of the French Pyrenees. The Tour de France visits here every year to challenge the pro riders on the slopes of these and other famous climbs. Now you too can follow in their tracks on In Situ’s Bike Tour of the Pyrenees.
Unlike like the pros though, it’s not a race for us to summit each legendary col. Riding at your own pace is fundamental to each and every In Situ trip. You’re well equipped with a bike GPS, giving you turn by turn directions for the entire route, plus you’re accompanied by two trip leaders (one on the bike and the other in the support van). This allows you the freedom to ride as fast or as slow as you desire. There’s never any pressure to keep up or wait up for other riders on your trip. The day is yours to explore, ride and take in at your own speed.
On Day 4 of our Pyrenees Bike Tour, we’ll tackle the legendary Col du Tourmalet preceded by the Col d’Aspin. After a hearty breakfast, we’ll warm up our legs with a 12km gentle downhill before hitting the slopes of the Aspin. At 13km (9 miles) it’s a great way to get the climbing legs going. On the other side, we’ll descend through the village of Sainte Maire de Campan. Some may wish to start straight up the Tourmalet, but others might see this as a great chance to take a mid-morning break by grabbing an espresso and chocolate croissant. What tough choices one has to make while on vacation, no?!?
