Coming To Europe On A Bike Tour? How To Choose The Best Airline For Your Trip.

Last updated on July 27, 2014 By In Situ Travel Leave a Comment

So you’ve decided to come to Europe on a bike tour. You’ve picked the one you’d like to join and reserved your spot on the trip. Now what? One of the first questions we are usually asked is: “What airport should I fly to and what airlines are best?” The answer depends on a few key points which center around two main things: price and convenience. It is also important to keep both of these in mind especially if you decide to bring your bike on the trip as well.

Let’s use our bike tour in Provence as an example (as if you were traveling from North America).

Our first suggestion would be to fly non-stop, if possible, to a major gateway city in Europe (i.e. Paris, London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam). Consider using a European airline as well as North American ones, especially if you are flying with your bicycle. The first reason is that several European airlines allow your bike to travel as part of your checked bag limit (i.e. for FREE). Air France and British Airways are two good examples. So while you may initially find cheaper flights elsewhere, be sure to factor in the roundtrip cost of flying with your bike. The second reason to fly non-stop to a city in Europe would be to reduce the risk of missed connections in North America. If you miss your connection in Chicago, for example, the next transatlantic flight might not be until the following day. On the other hand, if you miss a connection in London you might have to only wait a few hours for another flight to your final destination within Europe.

We’re also often asked, “What about connecting to Marseille, Nice or Geneva, since they are closer geographically to Provence?” Yes, these airports are physically closer to Provence, but one should look at the flight availability, the connections, as well as the total price and time involved in getting to them. Did you know that there is a high speed train directly from Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport terminal to Avignon (Provence) in just under 3 hours? That is typically faster and less expensive than connecting to Marseille from Paris by air and then taking the train from there to Avignon.

The bottom line is to shop around and look at all of your options before booking a flight over to join one of our bike tours in Europe. Still got questions? Email us and let us know. Safe travels!

Our Bike Tour in Provence: A Day in the Life

Last updated on July 27, 2014 By In Situ Travel Leave a Comment

To give you a sense of what it’s like to be on one of our cycling tours, we thought we’d share a “Day in the Life” with you. Below is an excerpt from our Provence bike tour.

Village of Beaucet Provence A view of the village of Beaucet, in Provence.

It’s Day 5 of your trip, you wake up in your country, villa-style room to views of Mont Ventoux…the mountain you challenged (and won) on yesterday’s ride. Hearing your stomach growl for yet another amazing French meal, you sit down along side your fellow riders to a traditional French breakfast of specialties fresh-baked only hours before and discuss the day’s ride…a long, gradual climb high along the cliffs of the Gorges de la Nesque.
As you finish your café au lait and prepare to saddle up, you turn on your GPS to show the way. You head out on a new adventure to continue your exploration of Provençale villages, mountains, lavender fields and oak forests at your own pace.  After a quick dip in the pool upon your return, you and several others in the group head into town for lunch at a local restaurant your trip leader has suggested. While several fellow travelers decide to head back for an afternoon siesta, a few of you sift through suggested afternoon activities. You decide on a wine tasting from a local vineyard.
As evening approaches, the sunset casts a majestic purple light this region is famous for. You arrive back at your home for the week, feeling almost local with your newfound treasures. Hungry, you are pleased to find the group congregating in the garden with wine and olives from a orchard down the road. You then sit down for a beautiful meal prepared in-house by a local chef. Now this is what we call, La Vie Provençale!

Longing for Summer and Dreaming of Provence

Last updated on July 27, 2014 By In Situ Travel Leave a Comment

During these cold days of winter we find ourselves day dreaming about those warm summer days in Provence. We’re still riding every chance we get during the winter, but there’s something to be said about not having to ride in so many layers that we resemble the Michelin Man.

We’re definitely missing the feel of the heat rising up from the road, the slight breeze that cools us off, the sound of cicadas in the trees and the faint smell of lavender from the fields.

Provence is a special place to ride. Can’t wait for the summer…
